What Politicians Do
Well, I’m a little late on this, but I’m posting it anyway: Obama’s ex-pastor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright has hit out at the constant harping in the media over his sermons, saying that he felt that the coverage was “unfair”, “unjust” and “untrue”, that they were “doing it for some very devious reasons,”. Well, to be perfectly fair, a lot of people out there probably felt the same about the good Reverend’s statements.
According to this MSNBC piece, when asked about Obama’s speech on race, Wright said; “He’s a politician, I’m a pastor. I do what I do. He does what politicians do. What happened in Philadelphia, where he had to respond to the sound bites, he responded as a politician.” I’m not sure if I like that statement too much. It’s almost like he doesn’t really agree with what Barack said. Of course, maybe that’s just me because I think “politician” sounds like a dirty word. :p
Talking about what politicians do, John McCain has asked the North Carolina GOP not to run an ad linking Obama with Wright, saying “There’s no place for that kind of campaigning,”. Regardless of what our foreign friend thinks, I think it’s pretty slick of McCain to say this - while he bashes Obama with other bits of character assassination. Like “elitist”. McCain can’t really be hurt badly by being called an elitist in turn; his whole life story militates against that - his fortune is his wife’s. Wright, on the other hand, opens McCain up towards criticism over the endorsement of John Hagee whose open views are as controversial as Reverend Wright’s - to say the least.
The Furry has commented, though, that Americans in general find it easier to forgive a militant view towards outsiders than a militant view towards mainstream America itself. He might have a point.
